AIKEN, SC – In a reversal of Saturday's outcome, Francis Marion University freshman Luke Bateup captured a three-set win at No. 5 singles to lift the 14th-ranked Patriots to a 5-4 Peach Belt Conference win over USC Aiken on Sunday (Feb. 26), while the FMU women rolled to another 9-0 win.
In the men's match, FMU led 2-1 after doubles, but with the No. 5 singles still to be decided, the contest was even at 4-4. Bateup won the first set 7-5, lost the second 6-1, and then claimed a 6-1 victory in the pivotal third set. On Saturday, Bateup lost the deciding match in three sets as FMU fell to 11th-ranked Lander University 5-4.
The Patriot men are now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt.
In the women's match, FMU did not lose a set as the Patriot women (5-0, 2-0) rolled to their fourth 9-0 win in five matches this season. Senior Jitka Gavdunova and junior Mona Blauen each extended their singles winning streak to eight matches – dating back to last season.
Both Patriot teams will play host to Tusculum College on Saturday (Mar. 3) at 2:30 p.m.
