Swamp Fox Club Mission Statement
The mission of the Swamp Fox Club is to provide full scholarship funding, as established under NCAA guidelines, for Francis Marion University’s 15 intercollegiate athletic programs—one competing in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference and 14 competing in Conference Carolinas at the NCAA Division II level.
The Swamp Fox Club welcomes memberships from both individuals and businesses. Contributions are directed to the Francis Marion University Foundation Athletic Scholarship Fund and support every sport at FMU—eight for women and seven for men. Your investment not only creates educational and athletic opportunities for deserving student-athletes, but also entitles you to valuable member benefits. You also have the option of designating your gift to a specific sport if so desired.
General Information
The Swamp Fox Club—formerly the Patriots Brigade—is the official booster club of Francis Marion University Athletics. The name honors General Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War hero whose cunning and courage helped secure American independence, and for whom the University is named.
Each year, more than 250 student-athletes receive scholarship assistance through the Swamp Fox Club. This community of supporters has become an essential part of Patriot Athletics, helping FMU pursue excellence, integrity, and pride across all its programs.
FMU Athletics is proud to be the Pee Dee’s Home Team. Rooted in Florence and serving the broader Pee Dee region, our student-athletes represent this community every time they compete. Planned Gifts
You can make a lasting contribution to the Patriot Athletic Scholarship Fund through gifts in trust, charitable annuities, endowed scholarships, life insurance policies, and bequests. Methods of Contribution
Each year alumni and friends of Francis Marion University make a variety of gifts in support of athletic and academic excellence. Each contributor can elect to make a gift in a way that best suits his or her personal preference. Gifts made to the Swamp Fox Club are tax deductible.
Cash and Other Gifts
Cash is the most common and flexible form of support. Some donors also choose to give appreciated stock, securities, real estate, or life insurance policies.
Matching Gifts
This method goes hand-in-hand with cash gifts. If your company is a participant in a matching gift program, you receive credit in the Swamp Fox Club for the total contribution - a great way to double or triple the impact of your gift and increase your membership level and its privileges! Planned and Estate Gifts
Contributors can make life income arrangements and donate monies using trusts, gift annuities, pooled income funds, etc. Individuals can choose to make provisions in their estates for the support of our athletic program, using a variety of gift vehicles. These gifts can provide present and future support for Francis Marion University athletics and can offer you valuable tax advantages and income benefits.
Tax Implications
All Swamp Fox Club contributions to the Athletic Scholarship Fund are deductible for income tax purposes and credited at full value in FMU’s gift records. Please note: to comply with IRS regulations, the fair market value of any member benefits received must be subtracted from the deductible amount. If you prefer to claim a deduction for your full gift, you may elect to waive your member benefits—simply indicate this preference on the membership form. The Athletic Department has estimated the fair market value of all benefits described in the SFC brochure; that information is available upon request.
