GREENVILLE, SC – Redshirt freshman McClure Thompson paced Francis Marion University on Saturday (March 23) as the Patriots sit in 19th place after the second round of the 50th-annual Furman Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament.
The tournament's final round will be contested on Sunday at the par-71, 6,984 yard Furman University Golf Course.
A five-under team total of 279 vaulted Coastal Carolina University (561) into first place in the team standings through 36 holes. The Chanticleers hold a six-shot advantage over Furman and Davidson College, who are tied for second with 567 team totals through two rounds. Francis Marion improved its team score by four strokes from Friday's first round, registering a 306 second-round score for a two-day total of 616.
Thompson posted a 75 to move into a tie for 70th with a two-day total of 151. Freshman Grainger Howle carded a 76 and is tied with Thompson for 70th. Through two rounds, freshman Pierre De Caevel is tied for 89th (78-76=154), freshman Grant Sellers is tied for 110th (81-80=161), and sophomore John Burghardt is tied for 115th (87-79=166).
After registering a team-high three birdies on Friday, De Caevel carded four more on Saturday to once again lead FMU. The Belgian is also one of 14 players in the field to have recorded an eagle, posting a two on the par-4 ninth hole during Friday's opening round.
Furman University's Keller Harper fired an eight-under-par 63 to tie the tournament record and climb into a first-place tie with Coastal Carolina's Wes Artac. Harper and Artac, who was one of four players tied for the lead after the first round, own a seven-shot advantage over the next closest competitors. Their 36-hole total of 133 also ties the tournament record.
