FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University women's tennis team claimed an 8-1 win over local-rival Coker College on Sunday (Feb. 25) in non-conference action, while the Patriot men registered a 7-2 victory over the Cobras.
The Francis Marion women improve to 4-3, while the men up their record to 3-5. Both squads will play at Barton College on Wednesday at 2 p.m. before hosting a trio of Peach Belt Conference matches this coming weekend beginning with Lander University on Friday at 2 p.m.
The Patriot women swept all three doubles matches by scores of 8-5, 8-2, and 8-2. Junior Anna Wintrich earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No.4 singles and senior Sofia Henning was victorious 6-1, 6-0 at the No.2 spot to account for the clinching points.
Nationally ranked (37th) junior Marie Krueger also won her match, 6-0, 6-4 at the top singles position.
In the men's match, freshmen William Anth-Forsberg and Charles Hutchings captured a 9-7 win at No.1 doubles and sophomores Mauricio Guerrero and Matheo Espinoza won 8-4 at the No.2 spot as the Patriots led 2-1 heading into singles competition.
FMU freshman Matt Astell earned a straight-sets win at No.3 singles 6-2, 6-3, while Guerrero rallied to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No.2. A Coker victory at No.1 singles trimmed the margin to 4-2, but Patriot freshman Paul Meuwissen clinched the victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) win at the No.4 spot.
