Gomez and Lanno garner Academic All-District recognition

Francis Marion University sophomores Valery Gomez and Lara Lanno have been named to the College Sports Communicators Women's Tennis Academic All-District Team for 2026.

Selected by CSC, the All-District Team recognizes the area's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions: NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.

Gomez, a native of Floridablanca, Colombia, has a 3.547 cumulative grade point average as a marketing major.

On the court, she posted a 6-9 singles record, mainly at the No.4 position, and a 5-6 doubles mark at the No.2 spot this past season.

Gomez was named to the Conference Carolinas Academic All-Conference Team for 2026, and has been placed on both the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll and the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll each of her first three semesters.  She is also part of the Patriot Mentor program.

Lanno, a native of Pforzheim, Germany, owns a 3.910 GPA as a management major.

She played No.1 singles for FMU this past season and registered an 11-8 record, while going 9-7 in doubles, splitting time between the No.2 and No.3 spots.  She was named a second-team All-Conference Team selection for 2026, after earning third-team honors as a freshman in 2025.

She has served two stints on the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and has also been named to both the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic and the Conference Carolinas Presidential honor rolls three times.

Francis Marion concluded its 2026 season with a 9-11 record and captured a share of the Conference Carolinas East Division crown.

The Division II CSC Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2026 Division II Academic All-America® program.

Gomez is a graduate of Colegio Panamericano, while Lanno is a product of Kepler-Gymnasium Pforzheim.
