SPARTANBURG, SC – Sophomore Lars Sandvoll fired a two-under-par 70 to help Francis Marion University climb to a Top-10 finish at the rain-shortened Wofford College Invitational Golf Tournament on Tuesday (April 4).
After play was suspended on Monday, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes. First-round play was finished on Tuesday morning before completion of the second and final round at the 6,648-yard, par 72 Country Club of Spartanburg course.
Francis Marion occupied 10th position after a first-round 292 team score. The Patriots improved by four strokes (288) in the afternoon to climb into a tie for seventh place with Bethune-Cookman University at 580.
Radford University, which stood third after 18 holes, rallied during the afternoon round to win the team title with a 564 total. Appalachian State University (567) finished second, while first-round leader George Mason University (569), Wofford (576), Austin Peay State University (578) and Gardner-Webb University (578) rounded out the Top-5 leaving FMU only two shots shy of that group.
Sandvoll's final round included three birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 508-yard 15th hole. At one point, he was five-under for his second round. He finished in a tie for 19th position with a 74-70=144 scorecard, his highest finish of the season.
Junior Callum McGuigan finished the opening round with a 3-under 69 and followed that with a 73 to tie for 13th place at 142, also his best finish of the year.
Other Patriots included junior Alessandro Caselli (74-72=146) in a tie for 28th position, junior Marc Casullo (75-73=148) in a tie for 36th, and freshman Mark Goodall (76-73=149) in a tie for 41st place, his best showing as a collegiate player.
Myles Creighton of Radford shot a final-round 5-under 67 to earn medalist honors with a 70-67=137 scorecard.
Francis Marion will conclude its 2016-17 schedule on April 14 and 15 at the Wolfpack Spring Intercollegiate Tournament in Raleigh, N.C.
