FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University men's and women's tennis teams both claimed Peach Belt Conference wins on Sunday (April 2) over Georgia Southwestern State University, with the men coming out victorious 8-1 and the 37th-ranked women winning 9-0.
The Patriot women up their season mark to 10-6 and improve to 6-4 in the Peach Belt. The FMU men improve to 6-7 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Both Francis Marion teams will play at USC Aiken on Sunday, April 9, with first serve set for noon.
The Patriot men won two of the three doubles matches, losing only at the No.1 position. FMU then swept all six singles matches, getting wins from 24th-ranked Richard Ashforth at No.1, senior Jannik Roettlingsberger at No.2, sophomore Tarass Thevenaz at No.3, junior Raul Madrid at No.4, freshman Matheo Espinoza at No.5, and freshman Henri Broeseler at No.6.
In the women's match, FMU captured all three doubles matches in relatively easy fashion and then lost only five games in sweeping the six singles contests. The Patriots earned wins from 25th-ranked Samantha Koelliker at No.1, senior Eva Lieben at No.2, junior Sofia Henning at No.3, sophomore Anna Wintrich at No.4, freshman Theresa Hammerschlag at No.5, and freshman Magan Head at No.6.
At the No.1 doubles spot, Koelliker and sophomore Marie Krueger earned an 8-4 victory, to move Koelliker into sole possession of fifth place on the program's career doubles wins list with 64, passing Lee Whitwell (1993-96).
