FLORENCE, SC – The 27th-ranked Francis Marion University men's tennis team breezed to a 9-0 non-conference win over Erskine College on Saturday (Feb. 18) and the 18th-ranked Patriot women also blanked the Flying Fleet 9-0 while not dropping a set.
Coming off their first losses of the season on Friday in a pair of narrow 5-4 decisions, both Francis Marion teams rebounded on Saturday to improve to 4-1. The Patriot women will play at NCAA Division I Coastal Carolina University on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both FMU squads will open Peach Belt Conference play on Friday when they entertain Flagler College at 11 a.m. on the Kassab Courts.
The men lost only one set en route to the win. Senior Richard Ashforth, ranked 18th nationally in singles, earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at No.1 singles, while junior Raul Madrid and freshman Mauricio Guerrero both gained 6-0, 6-0 victories at the No.5 and No.6 singles positions respectively.
In the women's match, FMU lost only five games in sweeping the three doubles matches. Senior Samantha Koelliker picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win the at No.1 singles spot for her 52nd career singles victory.
