DULUTH, GA – Senior Callum McGuigan fired a one-under-par 71 over the afternoon round on Monday (Oct. 16) to help Francis Marion University climb to 11th position in the team standings after the opening day of the seventh annual Autotrader Collegiate Men's Golf Classic.
The 54-hole event is being hosted by Georgia State University on the 6,694-yard, par 72 Berkeley Hill Country Club course. The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
Georgia Southern University led the team standings after each of Monday's two rounds. The Eagles compiled a 283-275=558 scorecard to grab a commanding 23-stroke lead over second-place Georgia State (292-289=581). The University of Notre Dame (297-285=582) is third followed by Lipscomb University (297-290=587) and Mississippi State University (296-292=588) to round the top five.
Francis Marion registered a 308 score over the first 18 holes and occupied 16th place, but the Patriots rebounded with a 290 tally – the fourth-best score of any squad during the second round – to climb five spots.
McGuigan shot a 76 during the first round to go with his 71 during the afternoon to tie for 22nd position in the players' standings at 147. He is also tied for fourth among all players with 27 pars over the opening 36 holes.
FMU senior Marc Casullo shot scores of 77 and 72 and is tied for 36th position with a 149 total. Junior Lars Sandvoll is among the tournament leaders with seven birdies and his 77-74=151 scorecard ties him for 48th place. Senior Alessandro Caselli (80-73=153) is tied for 64th while freshman John Burghardt (78-80=158), playing in his first collegiate event, is 85th.
Steven Fisk of Georgia Southern carded back-to-back 66 scores on Monday to stand at 132, good for a seven-stroke advantage in the players' standings.
