KIAWAH ISLAND, SC – Junior Alessandro Caselli's Top-20 showing led the Francis Marion University golf team to a 16th-place finish on Tuesday (Sept. 13), the final day of the season-opening Invitational at The Ocean Course event on Kiawah Island.
The 54-hole tournament event was held on the 7,115-yard, par-72 Ocean Course and was hosted by the College of Charleston.
Middle Tennessee State University carded a final-round 294 to capture the team title and finish six strokes ahead of second-place finisher University of Mississippi. Francis Marion fired a final-round 301 to finish the tournament at 901.
Caselli was the top Patriot finisher as he tied for 19th position at 70-71-75=216, besting his previous career-best finish of 25th-position at the 2015 Furman Intercollegiate Tournament. Sophomore Lars Sandvoll finished in a tie for 63rd-place at 75-75-76=226. Sandvoll played the opening 12 holes of the final day at two-under-par for the Patriots.
Other FMU golfers included junior Callum McGuigan; who tied for 73rd (77-79-72=228) and recorded the lowest score for FMU on Tuesday; freshman Mark Goodall tied for 85th (78-80-78=236), and junior Marc Casullo in 89th (83-75-85=243).
Jake Marriott of Augusta University earned medalist honors after shooting a final-round 73 to finish at 9-under 207.
Francis Marion will next play at the Firestone Invitational Tournament in Akron, Ohio, on Oct. 2 and 3.
