FLORENCE, SC – Conference-leading and nationally Top-5 ranked Armstrong State University claimed a pair of 9-0 wins over Francis Marion University, Wednesday (April 6) in Peach Belt Conference men's and women's tennis action.
The 32nd-ranked FMU women fall to 14-4 overall and 5-3 in the Peach Belt, while the fourth-ranked Armstrong State women improve to 19-1 and 10-0 and extend their unbeaten streak in regular-season PBC matches to 145 – a string that dates back to 2003.
The 50th-ranked Patriot men (11-6, 2-4) see their six-match winning streak snapped, while the third-ranked Pirates up their overall mark to 15-1 and their conference ledger to 8-0.
Both Francis Marion squads will play at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. The next home match for the Patriots will be Tuesday, April 12, at 2 p.m. against Georgia Southwestern State University.
In Wednesday's women's match, Patriot junior Eva Lieben and freshman Anna Wintrich lost a narrow 8-6 decision at No.3 doubles, while the other two matches were decided by 8-1 scores. In singles play, Wintrich played the closest match, losing 7-5, 6-1 at No.5 singles.
In the men's contest, FMU battled the Pirates tough in doubles play, dropping 8-6 and 8-5 decisions at the first and third positions.
FMU junior Richard Ashforth, ranked 23rd nationally, lost a 6-4, 6-4 match to fifth-ranked Pablo Gor at No.1 singles, while sophomore Raul Madrid fell 7-5, 6-3 at the No.6 position.
