FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Tarass Thevenza won at No.5 singles to hand the 50th-ranked Francis Marion University men's tennis team a 5-4 victory over 13th-ranked Georgia College, Sunday afternoon (April 3) in Peach Belt Conference action. The 32nd-ranked Patriot women saw their 11-match winning streak come to an end with a 6-3 loss to a 19th-ranked Georgia College squad.
The Patriot men improve to 11-5 overall and 2-3 in the PBC play with their sixth straight win. The FMU women fall to 14-3 and 5-2.
Both teams will play host to Top-5 Armstrong State University teams on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Francis Marion held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play in the men's contest. Junior Richard Ashforth won at the No.1 position, but the Bobcats earned wins at spots No. 2 and No.4 to deadlock the match at 3-3. For the second day in a row, Ashforth defeated a Top-15 opponent.
FMU freshman Phillip Sluga won in three sets at No.3, but Georgia College captured the No.6 singles match to tie the score at 4-4. Thevenaz won the final contest 7-5 and 7-6 with the second set tie-breaker being 7-5.
Georgia College won two of three doubles matches with Samantha Koelliker and Marie Krueger taking an 8-3 win at the No.1 position for the lone FMU point.
Koelliker won in straight sets at No.2 singles and sophomore Sofia Henning won in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) at No.4 singles, but the Bobcats captured the other four singles victories.
