FLORENCE, SC – The 32nd-ranked Francis Marion University women's tennis team picked up a crucial 7-2 Peach Belt Conference win over the University of North Georgia on Saturday afternoon (April 16), while conversely the 50th-ranked FMU men fell 7-2 to a 22nd-ranked UNG squad.
The FMU women up their overall mark to 16-5 and secure the fifth seed for next week's PBC Tournament with a 7-4 conference mark. The Patriot men (13-7, 4-5) drop into a three-way tie for fifth place in the PBC standings with one match remaining.
The Patriots will conclude their regular-season schedules on Sunday with a Senior Day match against Young Harris College at 10 a.m. on the Kassab Courts.
The Francis Marion women captured wins at No.1 and No.3 doubles to take an early 2-1 advantage. Freshman Marie Krueger, junior Samantha Koelliker, and junior Eva Lieben delivered straight-set singles victories at the top three positions to clinch the match. Sophomore Sofia Henning and freshman Anna Wintrich added singles wins at spots No.4 and No.6.
In the men's match, FMU led 2-1 after doubles play as junior Richard Ashforth and freshman Philipp Sluga teamed for an 8-3 win at the top position and junior Jannik Roettlingsberger and sophomore Raul Madrid won 8-3 at the No.3 spot.
However, the Nighthawks rallied to win all six singles contests in straight sets.
