FLORENCE, SC – The nationally ranked Francis Marion University men's and women's tennis teams both claimed Peach Belt Conference wins over Georgia Southwestern State University by scores of 8-1 and 9-0 respectively, Wednesday afternoon (April 13) on the Kassab Courts.
The 32nd-ranked Francis Marion women improve to 15-5 overall and 6-4 in PBC play, while the 50th-ranked Patriot men up their marks to 13-6 and 4-4 and climb into a tie for fourth place in the PBC standings.
The Patriots will conclude their regular-season schedules this weekend with a pair of key PBC matches: Saturday at 10 a.m. against the University of North Georgia and Sunday at 10 a.m. against Young Harris College.
The Francis Marion women dropped only two games in sweeping the three double matches. Only freshman Marie Krueger playing at the No.1 position lost more than two games in singles play – although she won rather handily 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Smanatha Koelliker upped her career records to 42-16 in singles play and 47-14 in doubles competition with a pair of shutout wins on Wednesday.
In men's action, FMU won every match but at No.1 doubles. Holding a 2-1 advantage, the Patriots quickly captured singles wins at spots No.1, 2, and 4 to clinch the match.
All-American Richard Ashford improved his career singles record to 41-11 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No.1 position. Freshman Tarass Thevenaz won for the 15th time in 19 matches this season with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No.5 position.
