WINGATE, NC – Sophomore Sofia Henning rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the third set for a 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 win at No.4 singles to clinch a 6-3 upset win for the Patriots over 35th-ranked Wingate University, Friday afternoon (Feb. 19) in women's tennis action. In the men's match, 45th-ranked Wingate edged the 48th-ranked Patriots 5-4.
The Patriots women improve to 4-2, while FMU men drop to 3-3. Both teams will play host to the University of Mount Olive on Sunday (Feb. 21) at 1 p.m. on the Kassab Courts.
In the women's match, Francis Marion was victorious at the No.1 and 3 doubles positions, and after freshman Marie Krueger won in straight sets at No.2 singles and junior Samantha Koelliker rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory at No.1 singles, the Patriots led 4-2. That set the stage for Henning's clinching win.
Patriot freshman Anna Wintrich accounted for the final point with a win in straight sets at No.6 singles.
Wingate took two of the three men's doubles matches, with only junior Jannik Roettlingsberger and sophomore Raul Madrid claiming a point for FMU at No.3 doubles.
Patriot junior Richard Ashforth quickly knotted the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win at the top singles spot, but Wingate posted singles victories at No. 2, 3, 4 to clinch the match.
Freshman Tarass Thevenaz and Madrid were winners for FMU at the bottom two singles positions.
