AKRON, OH – Juniors Callum McGuigan and Alessandro Caselli both shot one-under-par 71 during Monday's second round to help Francis Marion University climb to 13th position entering Tuesday's final round of The Firestone Invitational golf tournament.
The 54-hole tournament is being played on the 7,125-yard, par-72 Firestone Country Club – North Course and is hosted by the University of Akron. Tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The host Zips led the team standings after Monday's opening 18 holes, but Illinois State University overtook Akron during the second round. The Redbirds sit atop the team standings with a 562 score, followed by Akron (564), the University of Cincinnati and the University of Dayton (both at 567), and Eastern Michigan University (568).
Francis Marion carded a 300 team score on Monday morning, but recovered to shoot a 290 tally in the afternoon and climbed three positions in the team standings.
McGuigan leads the Patriot golfers as he is tied for 44th position with a 76-71=147 scorecard. Sophomore Lars Sandvoll is tied for 47th one stroke behind McGuigan at 75-73=148, while Caselli (79-71-150) and freshman Haakon Andersen (75-75=150) are both tied for 58th.
FMU junior Marc Casullo is tied for 71st place at 74-79=153.
Cincinnati's Austin Squires holds a one-stroke advantage in the race for medalist honors after carding rounds of 69 and 68 on Monday.
