HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC - The 30th-ranked Francis Marion University women's tennis team captured a 6-3 win over Erskine College on Thursday afternoon (April 2), while the Patriot men blanked the Erskine men 9-0 at the Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Club.
The Francis Marion women improve to 8-5, while the men climb above the .500 mark at 7-6. Both FMU squads will play host to nationally ranked Armstrong State University on Friday at 2 p.m. on the Kassab Courts.
In the women's match, Francis Marion captured two of the three doubles matches including sophomore Samantha Koelliker and senior Julia Graf remaining unbeaten (6-0) this season at No.1.
Koelliker and Graf also won their singles matches in straight sets at spots one and two respectively. Graf is fourth in career singles wins at FMU with a 63-10 mark. FMU freshman Sofia Henning and junior Mona Piller won in straight sets at positions No.3 and No.5.
In men's action, FMU cruised past the Flying Fleet by dropping only five games in doubles play and no sets in singles action.
Thirteenth-ranked Richard Ashforth improved to 11-2 on the season and 24-4 in his young career with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No.1 singles.
The other Patriot winners in singles play were Jannik Roettlingsberger (No.2), Gavin Davison (No.3), Dion Nijboer (No.4), Marius Wahlier (No.5), and Patrick Hensley (No.6).
