Patriots catch the Wave at Coca Cola Invite

SPARTANBURG, SC – Led by senior Lukas Crisp's five-under-par 67, Francis Marion University recorded its lowest team round in 13 seasons and the Patriots climbed to a fifth-place finish after Tuesday's final round of the 27th-annual Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational Golf Tournament.

The two-day 54-hole event was contested on the 6,648-yard, par-72 Country Club of Spartanburg course.

Francis Marion stood 10th after an opening-round 294 and entered Tuesday in eighth position after a second-round 284.  Over the final 18 holes, the Patriots posted a nine-under 279 tally to finish at seven-under-par 857 for 54 holes.  The 279 round was the lowest for Francis Marion as an NCAA Division I member and the best score since posting a 277 during the final round of the 2002 Division II Southeast Regional Tournament in Sneads Ferry, N.C.

Army earned the team title after leading wire-to-wire and finishing at 30-under-par 834, six strokes ahead of Wofford College (840).  Presbyterian College placed third at 854, followed by Western Carolina University in fourth at 856 and FMU in fifth.  Four of the five Patriot golfers recorded sub-par rounds on Tuesday.

Crisp (far right in photo)  tied for fourth in the players' standings with a 71-71-67=209 scorecard.  Tuesday's 67 was only one shot off his career best round of 66 set earlier this season.  Crisp was named to the All-Tournament Team and tied for ninth during the 54-hole event with 14 birdies.

FMU senior Austin Frick shot a one-under 71 on Tuesday and finished tied for 15th position at 72-70-71=213.  Junior Tobias Pettersen carded a two-under 70 and tied for 26th place with a 74-72-70=216 total, while senior John Michael Schaffer (79-72-71=222) tied for 50th and sophomore YongLiang Shao (77-71-75=223) tied for 55th position.  Frick also tied for eighth among the 75 golfers with 35 pars.

For the second consecutive round, Pettersen recorded an eagle on the par-5, 508-yard 15th hole.

Justin Pagila registered a final-round 67 to capture medalist honors with a 69-69-67=205 scorecard, one stroke better than J.T. Poston of Western Carolina.

Francis Marion will conclude its 2014-15 schedule this weekend (April 18-19) at the Wolfpack Spring Open Tournament hosted by North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
