SIMPSONVILLE, KY – Senior Taylor Banks fired a career-best-equaling three-under-par 69 on Tuesday (Sept. 24) to help lead Francis Marion University to a sixth-place finish at the University of Louisville's Cardinal Intercollegiate Golf Tournament.
The 54-hole event was played on the par 72, 7,036-yard Cardinal Club course in Simpsonville, Ken.
Francis Marion carded a 295 team score on Tuesday to finish at 881. The Patriots entered the event ranked 10th in the latest Golfstat Relative Rankings for NCAA Division I squads.
The host Cardinals led from start-to-finish and finished at four-under-par 860. Mercer University was second at 866, followed by Austin Peay State University (869), Furman University (872), and University of Cincinnati (873). The field included 15 teams.
Banks, who also registered a 69 during Monday's second round, finished in a tie for 16th position at three-over 219. The Lancaster, S.C., native was even par through nine holes on Tuesday, but finished the back nine in only 33 – which included a run of four birdies over five holes (10-14). The finish was his second Top-20 showing of the season. Prior to Monday, Banks also shot a 69 during a tournament in the fall of 2011.
Junior Austin Frick shot a 76 on Tuesday and tied for 26th place at 221, while both sophomore Tobias Pettersen and junior John Michael Schaffer were among a group tied for 34th at 224. Pettersen shot a 74 on Tuesday, while Schaffer carded a 76. Junior Lukas Crisp recorded a 77 over the final 18 holes and tied for 44th position at 227.
J.T. Poston of Western Carolina fired a final-round 69 to rally and win medalist honors with a 54-hole total of nine-under 207. He finished four strokes ahead of Monday's leader Hampus Bergman of McNeese State.
FMU will return to action on Oct. 7-8 at the University of Akron's Firestone Invitational Tournament.
