Last second play hands Patriots tough PBC loss

MONTEVALLO, AL— Senior Tiara Gause led Francis Marion University in scoring with 12 points, while shooting 6-of-15 from the floor, but a last-second basket by the University of Montevallo handed the Patriots a 66-65 Peach Belt Conference loss, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) in women's basketball action.

A layup by Falcons guard Zena Nasiloski capped a game-ending 9-0 run to erase a late eight-point lead by the Patriots.

FMU (7-6, 2-5) will continue a four-game road trip as the Patriots head to Morrow, Ga., to take on the undefeated and fourth-ranked Clayton State Lakers on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Following Gause for FMU was junior forward Dee Gray with 10 points and five rebounds.

Taylor Beverly led Montevallo (11-6, 6-2) with 25 points, on 11-of-18 shooting, and 17 rebounds.

Francis Marion committed 11 turnovers in the game, while forcing 16 turnovers, as well as shooting 44 percent from the floor throughout the game.

The Patriots and Falcons battled back and forth throughout the game, with Montevallo holding a 35-34 halftime advantage.  In the last five minutes of the game the Patriots held several eight-point leads. The Falcons then went on a 13-4 run to secure the victory, including the game winning basket by Nasiloski with just three seconds left to put the Falcons up by one.
