COLUMBUS, GA – Seventh-ranked and second-seeded Columbus State University used a 3-0 advantage after doubles play to springboard to a 5-0 victory over tenth-ranked and third-seeded Francis Marion University, Monday afternoon (April 30) in the finals of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional #2 women's tennis tournament at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center.
The Patriots end their season at 18-4 and fall just short of making their third trip to the Division II Sweet Sixteen. Three of the team's losses were to Columbus State. CSU (26-2) advances to the Sweet Sixteen, May 16-19, in Louisville, Ky.
The Cougars won the three doubles matches by 8-2, 8-3, and 8-2 scores. CSU then claimed straight-set wins at the No. 4 and 6 singles positions to close out the match.
Francis Marion was leading at the No.2 and No. 3 singles spots when the match ended.
FMU's lone senior, Jitka Gavdunova, ends her career with a 71-8 singles mark. She was trailing 10th-ranked Paola Cigui 6-4, 2-3 when CSU recorded its decisive points.
