RALEIGH, NC – The Francis Marion University men's golf team concluded its 2010-11 season with a ninth-place finish at the Wolfpack Spring Open, Sunday afternoon (April 17) in Raleigh, N.C.
The Patriots, who were third in the team standings after Saturday's opening round, shot a 303 score on Sunday. The University of Richmond rallied to win the team title, edging Lamar University by five strokes. The University of North Carolina placed third, followed by the hosts, N.C. State University.
The 12-team tournament was played on the par 71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
FMU sophomore Sebastian Backlund fired a final-round two-over-par 73 to finish tied for 13th position at 148. Freshman Fredrik Sporck followed Saturday's two-over-par 73 with a 76 to tie for 17th place – his best finish of the season.
Patriot sophomores Travis Gantt and Kenneth Svanum both shot 77 for the second straight day and tied for 36th, while junior Andrew Weir shot an 80 and finished 62nd at 162.
M.J. Daffue of Lamar earned medalist honors with a three-under 139 tournament score.
