AIKEN, SC – Francis Marion University registered a final-round 315 team score on Tuesday (March 8) to finish 18th at the 14th-annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Tournament. The 54-hole event was held on the 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto Golf Club course.
Second-round leader University of Alabama fired the low team round (284) on Tuesday to capture the team title by 11 strokes over the University of Virginia. Alabama is ranked third in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin College Team Performance Index.
FMU concluded play with a 926 team score for the three rounds.
FMU sophomore Kenneth Svanum shot a final-round 76 to finish tied for 65th place at 228. Sebastian Backlund tied for 71st position at 231 after shooting 80 on Tuesday.
Other Patriot golfers included junior Andrew Weir (82-75-78=235) tied for 79th, sophomore Travis Gantt (80-75-81=236) tied for 81st, and freshman Fredrik Sporck (78-82-84=244) in 88th position.
Alabama's Bud Cauley earned medalist honors after firing a 69 on Tuesday to set a new tournament record with a 201 score for the 54 holes. He shot consecutive rounds of 4-under-par 66 on Monday.
Francis Marion will travel to the Tar Heel State to play in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate Tournament this weekend (Friday-Sunday).
