LAURINBURG, NC – Sophomore guard Emilee Dunton scored a career-high 26 points to lead short-handed Francis Marion University to an 84-44 non-conference road win over St. Andrews University, Tuesday evening (Nov. 22) in women's basketball action.
The Patriots (1-2) pick up their first win of the 2011-12 campaign and will travel home to face Voorhees College in their home opener on Wednesday (Nov. 23) at 5:30 p.m. Please note the starting time, as earlier schedules had the tip-off set at 4 p.m., but the start time has been moved to 5:30 p.m.
Dunton connected on 9-of-13 field goal attempts, including 6-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc. The six three-pointers equal the fourth-highest single-game total in Patriot history.
FMU senior center T.T. Belcher tallied 11 points, while senior Danielle Gibson and freshman Chelsey Johnson each scored a career-high 10 points. Gibson also hauled down eight rebounds. Junior point guard Carmella Thompson racked up seven points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, her second double-digit rebounding effort in the first three games.
All 10 Patriots who dressed for the contest made their way into the scoring column. FMU did not have the services of two starters, guard Brittany Christian and center Daphne Walker, who both missed the game with injuries.
Francis Marion scored the game's first four points and never trailed. The Patriots advantage grew to 12-3 and later to 22-8 after a bucket by Kristen Dickerson with 10:19 left in the first half. However, the Patriots suffered through a 5-minute scoring drought that allowed the Knights to close to within 22-17. FMU then responded with a 12-0 run that pushed the margin to 34-17.
Francis Marion led 34-20 at intermission as Dunton scored 18 of her points in the opening half.
The Patriots opened the second stanza with a second 12-0 run, including a pair of three-pointers by Dunton, to go up 46-20. Francis Marion's largest lead came at 84-40 after a Hattie Harris three-pointer.
