GREENWOOD, SC - Led by three nationally ranked singles players
and a pair of ranked doubles teams, the No. 5 Francis Marion
women's tennis team defeated No. 38 Lander, 7-2, in a Peach Belt
Conference match Friday afternoon at The Joe Cabri Courts.
Francis Marion improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the PBC, while
Lander slips to 4-2, 0-1.
FMU's second-ranked Tereza Sykorova def. Lander's Brandi
Cordell, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles; FMU's 26th ranked Jitka
Gavdunova downed LU's Aurelia Ruffat, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 at No. 2
singles; and eighth-ranked Sabina Baberadova of FMU downed LU's
Eliza Adusumilli, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. In other singles
matches, No. 4 Mona Blauen (FMU) def. Caitlin Fell (LU), 6-1, 6-1;
No. 5 Kerry Hall (FMU) def. Nicola James (LU), 2-6, 6-1, 6-4; and
No. 6 Melanise Newbold (LU) def. Rachel Rubin (FMU), 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, FMU's second-ranked team of Sykorova/Baberadova def.
LU's Ruffat/Ana Luiza Zaia, 8-0, at the No. 1 spot; and FMU's 18th
ranked team of Blauen/Gavdunova downed LU's Cordell/Fell, 8-4 at
the No. 2 position. In No. 3 doubles, LU's Adusumilli/James def.
Hall/Augur of FMU, 8-2.
Francis Marion will play host to North Georgia College &
State University on Sunday at 11 a.m.
