Sophomore Miguel Maia of the Francis Marion University men’s tennis program was selected the McDonald’s Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Apr. 6-12, 2026.
The native of Barcelona, Spain, went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and was 3-0 at the No. 2 position in double competition as FMU won a trio of conference matches.
In a 7-0 sweep over Barton College, he defeated Nicola Bottelberghs 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles – providing the match-clinching point – while he and freshman Viktor Virághalmi won a 6-1 decision against Sean Maphosa and Diego Rodriguez at No. 2 doubles.
In a 6-1 victory versus Ferrum College, Maia beat Emanuel Ferreira in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) at No. 1 singles to clinch the match, while he and Virághalmi defeated Brian Karenzi and Sebastian Ondas 6-0 in No. 2 doubles.
In its final home match of the season, FMU delivered a 7-0 shutout win over Lees-McRae College on Saturday. At No. 1 singles, Maia won 6-3, 6-2 versus Isaac Yang before he and Virághalmi produced a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles over Yang and Hudson Hoskins.
Maia is now 7-2 against Conference Carolinas singles opponents in 2026.
Francis Marion will close the regular season with a pair of divisional road matches as it travels to Barton College on Wednesday before playing on Saturday at Chowan University.
