AIKEN, SC – The 37th-ranked Francis Marion University women's tennis team earned a 7-2 win over USC Aiken on Saturday (April 8) in Peach Belt Conference action, but the Patriot men fell to the 33rd-ranked Pacers 6-3.
The FMU women improve to 11-6 overall and move into a tie for sixth place in the PBC standings with a 7-4 mark. The Patriot men (6-8, 2-7) will play at Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday at 2 p.m., before both FMU squads host Georgia College on Friday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day and the annual Sea of Red match.
Francis Marion swept all three doubles matches in women's action and then earned singles points at positions No.1 (25th-ranked Samantha Koelliker), No.3 (Eva Lieben), No.4 (Sofia Henning), and No.6 (Theresa Hammerschlag).
Senior Richard Ashforth and sophomore Tarass Thevenaz won 8-6 at the No.1 men's doubles spot, but USCA claimed the other two doubles points. Ashforth, ranked 24th in NCAA Division II singles, also won his singles match 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, while freshman Matheo Espinosa accounted for the other Patriot point with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win at the No.5 position.
