Patriots pummel Trojans 19-2 behind Clauss & Rubino

ETTRICK, VA – Center fielder Casey Clauss and catcher Matt Rubino each registered four-hit afternoons and junior left-hander Brian Cherrington earn his first win as Francis Marion University defeated Virginia State University 19-2, Tuesday (March 17) in non-conference baseball action.

The two squads will square off again on Wednesday with first pitch at 1 p.m.

Francis Marion (13-9) totaled 22 hits and scored in six of the nine innings.  The Patriots led 8-0 after the opening three frames and were never seriously threatened.

Cherrington (1-0) made his first start of 2015 and allowed five hits and two earned runs in six innings, while striking out nine and walking only two.

Clauss went 4-for-7 with three runs scored and two driven in, while Rubino was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs.  It is Rubino's fourth game with at least four hits this season.

VSU falls to 13-4.
