GREENVILLE, SC – Francis Marion University junior forward Jose Coutinho and graduate student defender David Guevara were honored as the Conference Carolinas men's soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week for the period of Aug. 31 - Sept. 6.

A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Coutinho totaled four points after netting two goals, as the Patriots posted a 1-1 mark with a 1-0 record in the conference action. On Wednesday afternoon, he scored a game-tying goal in the 39th minute of the first half against #9-ranked Auburn Montgomery, but FMU ultimately fell by a 2-1 margin.

On Saturday, the Patriots delivered a stellar comeback in the final 10 minutes, as Coutinho scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to steal a 3-2 victory at Chowan.

A 6-foot-1 graduate student from Guayaquil, Ecuador, Guevara played all 180 minutes over two matches and netted a game-tying goal for Francis Marion.

He competed for all 90 minutes on a sweltering Wednesday afternoon in Florence as FMU battled #9 AUM. On Saturday, he once again played all 90 minutes and scored the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute, as the Patriots rallied past the Hawks.

It marks the second straight week that Francis Marion has swept the weekly league awards.

The Patriots will travel to Wingate University on Wednesday, Sept. 9, for a non-conference regional match at 7:30 p.m. FMU returns to Hartzler Field on Saturday, Sept. 12, to face Shorter University in Conference Carolinas action at 1 p.m.

Coutinho is pursuing a bachelor's degree in business administration and is a product of Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa. Guevara is a member of the MBA program and is a graduate of Unidad Educativa Particular Javier.
