Patriots win second straight, 6-1 over Trojans

FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University women's tennis team won its second consecutive Conference Carolinas match with a 6-1 decision over visiting University of Mount Olive, Wednesday afternoon (Match 18).
 
Francis Marion (3-5, 2-1) will travel to conference newcomer Ferrum College for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday (March 21).
 
In doubles action on Wednesday, Mount Olive won at the top spot, but the Patriots won at the other two positions to earn the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. FMU freshman Alyssa Boschin and sophomore Lara Lanno were victorious 6-2 at No.3 doubles and then sophomores Fatima Hernandez Huerta and Valery Gomez won in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2), in the decisive No.2 doubles match.
 
Hernandez Huerta upped the margin to 2-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory at No.5 singles.  Lanno followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the top singles spot and junior Magdalena Skachova won 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in come-from-behind fashion at No.2 singles to clinch the match.
 
The other FMU points came from freshman Lucia Acuna Montero (6-1, 6-1) at No.6 singles and Gomez (4-6, 6-2, 1-0 [10-6]) at No.4 singles.
