FMU Baseball honored, including 3 major conference awards

Three members of the Francis Marion University baseball team earned All-Conference honors from Conference Carolinas for 2025 and the Patriots picked up three of the four major awards.

Senior left-hander Rijnaldo Euson was named the Pitcher of the Year, while sophomore first baseman Charlie Bussey III was tabbed as the Player of the Year, and first-year head coach Jeff Jefferson was selected as the Coach of the Year.

While Euson and Bussey III were placed on the first-team All-Conference squad, senior shortstop Rayth Petersen garnered second-team recognition.

Jefferson guided Francis Marion to a 39-11 regular-season record, its best campaign since 2012.  The Patriots shared the Conference Carolinas regular-season crown with Young Harris College as both squads posted 22-8 marks.  FMU also set a program record for home victories with a 25-5 mark.

FMU is the top seed for this week's conference tournament at Caromont Health Park in Gastonia, N.C.  The Patriots will face the winner of the Shorter University/Emmanuel University (Ga.) play-in game on Thursday at 11 a.m.

Euson, a native of Haines City, Fla., owns an 11-2 pitching mark with one save and a 2.76 earned run average.  He has logged 91.1 innings, allowed only 66 hits, fanned 109 batters, and held opponents to a .197 batting average against.  He has also registered seven complete games.  He leads the conference in wins, strikeouts, innings, and batting average against and ranks second in ERA.

Bussey III, a native of Graniteville, S.C., is batting a conference-leading .429 with 19 doubles, seven home runs, and 55 runs batted in.  He has scored 60 runs in only 49 games and registered a .540 on-base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage.  He has stolen 15 bases in 21 attempts, recorded 25 multi-hit games and 16 multi-RBI contests, and safely reached base in 43 of 49 games. He leads the conference in OPS and ranks second in on-base percentage, and third in both total hits and doubles.   In the field, he has committed only three errors in 350 fielding chances for a .991 percentage.

Bussey III was named the conference's Player of the Week twice during the season.

Petersen, a native of Cary, Ill., is hitting .344 with 45 runs scored, eight doubles, four triples, a homer, and 43 RBIs.  He owns a .428 on-base percentage and has been successful in 22 of 30 stolen base attempts.  He has registered 18 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI contests.  He ranks among the Top 25 in the conference in eight offensive statistical categories, including 20th in batting, third in triples, seventh in steals, and 10th in total hits.  He also made seven relief appearances on the mound and compiled an 0-1 record with four saves and a 5.59 ERA.

Euson is an elementary education major and a graduate of Haines City Senior High School, while Bussey III is a sports management major and a product of Aquinas High School.  Petersen is majoring in business and is a graduate of Barrington High School.
