TIGERVILLE, SC – Freshman Valery Gomez won the clinching singles match in a tie-breaker to lead Francis Marion University to a 4-3 road victory over North Greenville University, Saturday afternoon (March 29) in Conference Carolinas women's tennis play.
 
Francis Marion improves to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.  The Patriots will host Chowan University on Wednesday at 2 p.m. on the Kassab Courts.
 
Francis Marion took an early 1-0 advantage by winning all three doubles matches.  Senior Kim Venghaus and freshman Maia Warlies won at the No.3 position by a 6-2 score and freshman Fatima Hernandez Huerta and senior Sophia Hansen were victorious 6-2 at the No.2 spot.  Freshman Lara Lanno and Gomez completed the sweep with a 6-3 win at the top spot.
 
North Greenville rallied to take a 2-1 lead with wins at No.1 and No.3 singles, but Lanno evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No.2 position.
 
Venghaus broke the deadlock with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No.6 singles and Gomez provided the clinching point with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win at the No.4 spot.
