Patriots outslug Hawks for conference sweep

MURFREESBORO, NC – Junior shortstop Peyton Wilson rapped out four hits and four different Patriots drove in three runs as Francis Marion University outslugged Chowan University 16-13 to earn a sweep of Monday afternoon's (March 11) Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader.  FMU won the opener 6-2.

Francis Marion, now 13-8 overall and 6-3 in league play, will travel to Lander University on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. non-conference contest.

In Monday's first game, senior left fielder Zack Summerville collected three hits, scored once, and drove in two runs to back the starting pitching of junior right-hander Josh Adams (2-0).

Adams allowed only two runs on six hits in six innings of work.  He struck out five and walked only one.  Sophomore righty Tyson Hall pitched a scoreless seventh inning to finish off the victory.

FMU junior first baseman Kollin Crepeau also recorded three hits, while junior right fielder Tanner Cannon had two hits.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Wilson was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second, and came home on a run-scoring single up the middle by Summerville.

The margin grew to 3-0 in the fourth as Cannon doubled and later scored on an RBI-single through the left side by sophomore third baseman Peyton Starkey, and Crepeau scored on a Chowan fielding error.

The Hawks trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth, but Francis Marion scored twice in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Owen Taylor and a run-scoring single by Crepeau.  Summerville accounted for the final tally with a two-out RBI-single through the left side to plate Starkey.

Chowan starter Josh Wise (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

In game two, Wilson also scored three times and drove in a run in addition to his four hits. Taylor went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Starkey also had three hits.  Sophomore center fielder Caleb Oakley, Taylor, Crepeau, and junior catcher Nick LaVigne were the four Patriots to drive in a trio of runs each.

Francis Marion used a three-run fifth inning to erase a 3-2 Chowan lead.  Crepeau hit a solo homer to knot the score and later Oakley drilled a two-run double to left-center field that put the Patriots up 5-3.

Chowan answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, but FMU tied the contest at 8-8 with three runs in the sixth.  Taylor and senior third baseman Blake Falor both doubled home runs and Crepeau hit a sacrifice fly.

FMU took the lead for good with a four-run seventh inning that included a solo homer by Wilson and a three-run shot from LaVigne.  Chowan answered with three runs in the eighth to draw within 12-11 heading to the ninth inning.

The Patriots batted around and scored four in the ninth as Oakley doubled in a run and Taylor hit a two-run double.  The Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the frame before junior righty Braxton Elms IV recorded the final three outs to secure the sweep.

Freshman southpaw Dylan Wiegel (1-1), a South Florence High School product, earned his first collegiate win with three innings of middle relief work.

Summerville walked five times in the second contest to tie the FMU single-game record, previously set by Paul Larsen against Shepherd College on March 13, 1985.

Francis Marion outhit the Hawks 18-16 and the Patriots were the beneficiary of 13 walks by Chowan pitching.
