Short-handed Patriots fall to Hawks 3-2

FLORENCE, SC – Chowan University forward Junior Smith scored the match-winning goal with 2:38 left to give the Hawks a 3-2 vicotry over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Oct. 16) in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action.

Francis Marion suffered its first conference loss and falls to 5-3-5 overall and 4-1-2 in league play.  Chowan, the conference's pre-season favorite, improves to 5-4-2 and 4-2-1.

The Patriots will play at Emmanuel University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. to start a four-match road swing.

Francis Marion outshot Chowan 14-9 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Francis Marion nearly scored in the opening seconds, when forward John Osadolor dribbled past Chowan goalkeeper Chase Jansen, but was steered away from the open goal by a Hawk defender.

Goals by Brandon Hill and Smith in the 20th and 30th minutes gave the Hawks a 2-0 first-half lead.  Only 1:03 after the second score, Francis Marion responded with its first goal.

FMU midfielder Mario Buelga crossed the ball on the ground into the penalty area from the right side of the field.  Junior forward Juan Salazar Lopez took the pass, settled the ball, turned and shot from 16 yards out to draw the Patriots to with 2-1.

The score remained 2-1 well into the second half.  FMU senior forward Andre Sabino and Salazar Lopez combined on a give-and-go sequence that ended with Sabino burying a 19-yard attempt from the right side of the box at 76:44 and evening the score at 2-2.

Salazar Lopez created a pair of chances to put FMU ahead in the final 10 minutes.  He headed a cross by Edorta Cabieces over the crossbar at 80:32, and in the 84th minute, he found a deflected ball land at his feet in the penalty area, but his attempt from 13 yards out was high.

However, Francis Marion went down to 10 players following a red card in the 86th minute.  Minutes later, Smith took a through ball from near midfield and knocked home a 13-yard shot for the winning score.

FMU goalkeeper Alberto Aragoneses Lablanca finished the match with two saves, while Jensen made five stops.
