SPARTANBURG, SC – The Francis Marion University women's soccer team fell short to Converse University 1-0 on Saturday (Sept. 30) in Conference Carolinas action.
Â
FMU (6-2-0, 3-1-0) will be back on the pitch Tuesday (Oct. 3) when it hosts Chowan University at 4:30 p.m. – the first of two home matches next week.
Â
The Patriots held off Converse until the 80th minute when a goal was scored by Angelica Gonzalez. Despite a great diving effort from FMU senior goalkeeper
Makayla Willets, the shot tipped just off the edge of her glove and crept in to put the Valkyries up by one.
Â
Despite the unwanted outcome for Francis Marion, the Patriots outshot the Valkyries 12-2 with three being on frame. Senior forward
Ashley Jordan led with three shots and was followed by sophomore
Kristina Syragakis, junior
Jordan White, and sophomore
Izzy Ashley with two shots apiece.
Â
FMU took all four corner kicks throughout the game, but was unable to land a goal in the back of the net. Converse had to work relentlessly on defense to hold the Patriots offense back, constantly having to box out Syragakis and Jordan. Ashley and White also registered shots on Valkyries goalkeeper Allie Nepomuceno, adding to the total 12.
Â
Playing the entirety of the 90-minute game, Willets didn't register any saves.
