FMU Women draw with Chowan 2-2

FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University women's soccer team closed in a 2-2 tie with Chowan University on Tuesday (Oct. 3) evening with goals from graduate student midfielder Jen Bartlett and freshman defender Joy Brockmann.

FMU, now 6-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Conference Carolinas play, will be returning to Hartzler Field on Saturday (Oct. 7) against reigning conference champs UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m.

Both teams fought head-to-head for the first 20 minutes of the game, each putting up shots. It wasn't until the 25th minute when the Patriots took the lead off the goal scored by Bartlett. Crossed from the left side of the box by junior midfielder Haley Sink, Bartlett beat Chowan goalkeeper Kirsten Peterson to the ball and chipped it into the far side of the net.

Five minutes later, Chowan's Natasha Bailey tied up the game at 1-1 after a cross into the box got past goalkeeper Makayla Willets glove' and opened the goal for a 13-yard shot wide-open shot.

Answering Bailey's goal 35 seconds later, Brockmann put the Patriots up 2-1 with a header off a corner kick by Kristina Syragakis at the 29:40 mark.

With FMU leading by one, the Patriots continued to play coolly and maintained possession for the majority of the game, 53 percent to 47 percent. Junior midfielder JG Garon and senior defender Ainara Eizaguirre held the line defensively, keeping out the Hawk's forwards. Even with strong defensive efforts, Karla Artolozaga brought the game to a stalemate with a tap-in goal from two yards out at the 78:43 mark.

Francis Marion outshout Chowan 10-7, with eight attempts being in the first half. The Patriots also led in corner kicks 4-2.
