Patriots drop pitchers’ duel with Wolves 3-1

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to snap a 1-1 deadlock and the Wolves claimed a 3-1 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) in non-conference baseball action.

Francis Marion (0-2) will play the final game of the series on Sunday (Feb. 5) for the Patriot's home opener with the first pitch at 3 p.m. PLEASE note the start time has been pushed back one hour due to forecasted rain.  Former and longtime FMU athletic trainer Spyder Webb will throw out the ceremonial pitch.

Senior outfielder Will Hardee went 0-for-4 and had his 27-game hitting streak snapped.  His streak ranks third on the FMU all-time list behind Michael Bartell (30) from 1988-89 and Greg Phelps (34) from 2007-08.

FMU sophomore right-hander Robbie Jordan started on the mound and tossed six innings and fanned five batters. Fifth-year right-hander Nick Palumbo (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he pitched 1.2 innings, allowed two runs, and struck out one.

Sophomore infielder Tyler Reynolds scored the lone run for the Patriots while collecting a double. Freshmen infielder Charlie Bussey III secured his first career hit as a Patriot at the plate as well.

Senior right-hander Kyle Baker picked up the win for Newberry tossing four innings.

The Wolves (2-0) scored their first run in the bottom of the second on an error while FMU knotted the score later in the sixth at 1-1. In the sixth, Reynolds doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout by senior second baseman Naphis Llanos.

With the score tied in the eighth inning, the Wolves pushed ahead 3-1 on a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single.
