Juanche Gomez earns FMU a tie with late goal

FLORENCE, SC – An 82nd-minute goal by sophomore midfielder Martin Juanche Gomez allowed Francis Marion University to escape with a 1-1 tie with visiting Chowan University, Tuesday night (Oct. 3) in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action.

FMU, now 5-1-4 overall and 4-0-2 in conference play after a second consecutive 1-1 deadlock, runs its unbeaten streak to seven matches.  The Patriots will travel to the Sunshine State on Saturday to face 14th-ranked Florida Tech at 5 p.m.

The next home game for the Patriots will be Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. against the University of Mount Olive.

On Tuesday, Francis Marion outshot the Hawks 17-10 and held a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Juanche Gomez tallied the equalizing score at the 81:38 mark after a cross from junior forward Edorta Cabieces was pushed out by Chowan goalkeeper Chase Jansen.  The ball landed at the feet of Juanche Gomez and he buried a seven-yard shot into the goal.

The Hawks registered the only shot over the final eight minutes, but FMU junior goalkeeper Lukas O'Grady made a diving stop of an attempt by Junior Smith in the 87th minute.  FMU earned a corner kick in the 90th minute, but could not convert it into a shot attempt.

O'Grady, making his second straight start, recorded four saves, while Jansen made four stops as well.

Chowan took a 1-0 advantage at 40:09 when Leke Ademola unleased a bending 31-yard blast from a slight right angle.

Cabieces led FMU with five shots, while senior midfielder Vicente Arratia Veit had four shots.  Arratia Veit hit the right post in the 16th minute when the match was still scoreless.  In the 23rd minute, Cabieces had his shot blocked by a Hawks defender resulting in a corner kick, and Arratia Viet's bending shot in the 26th minute went just high and wide right.

Prior to the tying goal, FMU junior midfielder Andre Sabino missed on a header in the six-yard box, hammering the ball just outside the right post in the 53rd minute, and junior forward Rafael Silverio had his 19-yard shot leak just outside the left post in 80th minute.

Francis Marion maintained possession for 57 percent of the contest.
