FLORENCE, SC – Freshman midfielder
Camilo Salazar and junior forward
Rafael Silverio both registered their first goals of the season as Francis Marion University blanked the University of Mount Olive 2-0, Wednesday evening (Oct. 11) in Conference Carolinas men's soccer play.
Â
FMU, unbeaten in its last eight matches, improves to 6-1-4 overall and 5-0-2 in conference action. The Patriots will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, while raising donations for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as they host Lees-McRae College at 3:30 p.m.
Â
Francis Marion outshot the Trojans 16-5 and held a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.
Â
FMU junior goalkeeper
Felipe Ramos Peralta recorded three saves en route to his second shutout of the season.
Â
Over the opening 45 minutes, the Patriots registered an 11-1 edge in shots, with Mount Olive's only attempt coming with 12 seconds left in the half.
Â
Salazar put FMU up 1-0 at the 25:13 mark when he corralled a cross from graduate student Hugo Jonsson and knocked in a six-yard shot.
Â
Ramos Peralta made two of his stops early in the second half to maintain the Patriot advantage. He turned away a header by UMO's Guilherme Semola at 61:36 and then stymied Rafael Obraczka's effort at 63:26.
Â
Silverio doubled the lead at 80:20 with an 18-yard shot past Trojan goalkeeper Axel Engren. The sequence began with a nice chip pass from midfield by junior
Miguel Bello that put Silverio behind the Trojan backline. Both Silverio and Salazar paced FMU with three shots apiece.
Â
Engren finished with five saves.
Â
Francis Marion held a 55 percent to 45 percent advantage in ball possession.
