FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University led in shots, corners, and time of possession, but lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to visiting Emmanuel College (Ga.), Saturday night (Oct. 8) in Conference Carolinas men's soccer play.Â
Â
The Patriots drop to 4-5-4 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play, while Emmanuel improves to 5-6-0 and 4-4-0.
Â
FMU will host Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. for Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
Â
Francis Marion held an 11-3 advantage in shots, a commanding 12-0 edge in corner kicks, and a 64 percent-to-36 percent margin in time of possession.Â
Â
However, the Lions converted on their only shot on frame of the entire match. The score came at 64:44 and was the result of an 18-yard bending shot by Alexander Panner that found the upper-90 of the Patriot goal.
Â
FMU goalkeeper
Andrea Scapolo did not make a save, while Emmanuel's Rodrigo De La Terga registered one save en route to the shutout.
Â
The opening 45 minutes did not feature a single shot on target – and none at all by the Lions. FMU midfielder Hugo Jonsson took a pass from
Alvaro Zamora and shot from 13 yards out in the 17th minute, but that attempt went outside the left post. Zamora released a right-footed 20-yard blast that soared over the crossbar in the 29th minute.
Â
FMU's
Matias Morales entered the contest in the 80th minute and 25 seconds later unleased a 25-yard lined shot that forced a tremendous push-over-the-crossbar save by De La Terga. Despite the dozen corner kicks, that would prove to be the Patriots' best scoring opportunity.
Â
Four different Patriots recorded two shots: Jonsson, Zamora,
Paul Sapper, and
Javier Bello.
