Box Score FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University men's tennis team opened its 2021 campaign with a pair of tough losses on the first day of the fourth-annual City of Florence College Invitational Tournament held at the Dr. Eddie Floyd/City of Florence Tennis Complex on Saturday (Feb. 6).
 
The Patriots dropped a 4-0 decision to a powerful Bluefield State College squad and then lost a narrow 4-3 decision to local-rival Coker University, a match decided at the final singles position.
 
FMU will not play on the final day of the tournament on Sunday, but will return to action on Feb. 14 against Lenoir-Rhyne University, also to be played at the city complex.
 
In the opener against the Blues, Patriot senior William Anth-Forsberg and freshman Adam Ernberg won their No.2 doubles match by a 6-2 score, but BSC captured the third doubles match and the resulting doubles point.
 
Against the Cobras (1-1), the two squads split the first two doubles matches – senior Mauricio Guerrero and freshman Leonel Gonzalez won 6-1 at No.2 – but Coker was able to earn the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at the No.3 position.
 
In the singles action, Francis Marion received singles wins by Anth-Forsberg at No.1, Guerrero at No.2, and Gonzalez at No.5 to knot the match at 3-3.  Coker's Thibaut Decaluwe outlasted FMU freshman David Bodson 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 at the No.6 position to decide the match.
