FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University rebounded from a nail-biting semifinal loss (4-3 to Barton College) to down Palm Beach Atlantic University 4-2 in the third-place match of the second-annual City of Florence College Men's Tennis Invitational on Saturday.

The two-day event was played at the City of Florence/Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center.

Francis Marion, now 2-1, will play at fourth-ranked Wingate University on Wednesday at noon.  The next home match for the Patriots will be Feb. 18 against local-rival Coker University at 2 p.m.

Freshman Liam Day rallied to claim the clinching singles win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the No.3 position in the victory over PBAU.

Seniors Mauricio Guerrero and Henri Broeseler upset the nation's 21st-ranked doubles team at the No.2 spot 6-2, and then FMU earned the doubles point when Day and junior William Anth-Forsberg won 6-4 at No.3.

In all five singles matches that finished, the decisions were all in three sets.  Prior to Liam's victory,

Guerrero won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 5 and graduate student Alex Regner was victorious at No.4 singles by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 count.

Earlier in the semifinal match with Barton, FMU led 3-0 and after the Bulldogs knotted the match at 3-3, served for the match twice in the final singles contest.

Doubles wins by Anth-Forsberg and Regner at No.1 and junior Matt Astell and sophomore Brandon Sweeney at No.2 provided the Patriots with the doubles point.

Regner followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No.4 singles and Day took a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No.3 to put FMU up 3-0.  However, Barton rallied with victories at positions No.1, No.6, No.5, and No.2 to capture the win.  The later three decisions were all in three sets.
