McEwen's overtime goal sinks Sand Sharks 2-1

Box Score

FLORENCE, SC – Junior midfielder Dayle McEwen connected for two goals, including the match-winner in double overtime, in a 2-1 victory over USC Beaufort, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 21) in non-conference women's soccer play.

The win, in the first-ever meeting with the Sand Sharks, brings the Patriots to a 3-1 start. This is the second 3-1 start in the past three seasons.

The Patriots were led in shots by McEwen with five (two on target). Her first goal of the afternoon came at the 6:55 mark on a header following a free kick from Anna Capra. The other goal came in the second overtime at 103:03 when she tapped the ball into the net from four yards out during confusion in the 6-yard box.  Freshman Maggie Cross earned the assist on the play as she fielded a throw-in and then served the ball into the 6-yard box.

McEwen leads FMU with four goals this season, including two match-winners, and now has 15 goals for her career with six winning scores.

FMU had 19 shots, including 11 on target, with eight Patriots contributing. Junior Sarah Moll registered four shots and junior Emma Hall had three shots, all of which were all on goal. Faith Allen and Zenia Nava each registered two shots, while teammates Sierra Cartano, Kiley Barr, and Rianna Orello had one shot apiece.

FMU senior goalkeeper Micahla Kitchen registered her second start of the season and made five saves in the victory.  Junior Logan Leask registered seven stops in goal for USC Beaufort (4-3-0).

USCB junior midfielder Allison Schaffer scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute to knot the score at 1-1.  The Sand Sharks posted seven shots during the contest.

FMU led in corner kicks 7-4.

With the score deadlocked at 1-1, Moll had two chances to end the match in regulation.  Leask snagged her header at 83:52, and less than three minutes later, Moll fired a shot from 17 yards out that sailed over the crossbar.

Francis Marion outshot USCB 5-1 in extra time.  However, Kitchen was forced to make a diving stop of a shot by USCB's Madeline Matusik only 3:50 into the first overtime session.

Francis Marion will travel to Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday (Sept. 25) for a 7 p.m. kick-off.  The next home match for FMU will be Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. against Lander University.
