FLORENCE, SC – For the second consecutive day, the Francis Marion University men's tennis team used a win in the final singles match to claim a 5-4 Peach Belt Conference, with Young Harris College being the opponent on Sunday (March 4). The women's match also came down to the final match with Young Harris eking out a 5-4 victory.
The FMU men even their overall mark at 6-6 and improve to 2-3 in the PBC. The Patriot women fall to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Both squads will play host to Bluefield State College on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter.
In the men's match, FMU took a 2-1 advantage after doubles competition with freshman William Anth-Forsberg and Charles Hutchings winning 9-7 at No.1 and sophomores Mauricio Guerrero and Matheo Espinoza being victorious 8-5 at No.2.
Hutchings earned the deciding point on Sunday with a 7-5 6-3 win at the No.5 position, only one day after picking up the deciding singles win on Saturday against nationally ranked University of North Georgia. Other Patriot wins on Sunday came from Anth-Forsberg (6-2, 6-0) at No.1 and freshman Paul Meuwissen (2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3) at No.3.
Despite an 8-2 win at No.2 doubles by senior Sofia Henning and junior Anna Wintrich, the Patriots entered singles play trailing 2-1.
Wins at the top three singles spots by senior (#37) Marie Krueger (6-2, 6-4), Henning (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), and Wintrich (5-7, 6-1, 6-0) gave Francis Marion a 4-3 lead, but a hard-fought three-set loss at the No.5 position proved to be the deciding point for Young Harris.
