FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University women's tennis team captured its first Peach Belt Conference win of the year with a 7-2 victory over Lander University, while the FMU men fell to the 8th-ranked Bearcats 7-2, Friday (March 2) on the Kassab Courts.
The Francis Marion women improve to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the PBC, while the men fall to 4-6 and 0-3. Both squads will play host to the University of North Georgia on Saturday at 11 a.m. as the Patriots continue their three-match home stand this weekend.
In the women's match, FMU took two of three doubles matches with 13th-ranked Marie Krueger and Elisa Lang winning 8-0 at the No.1 position and senior Sofia Henning and junior Anna Wintrich being victorious 8-6 at the No.2 spot.
Krueger, Henning, and Wintrich gave FMU its clinching points with straight-set wins at spots No.1, No.2, and No.4. Henning remains unbeaten in singles play this season at 6-0. Other Patriot points came when sophomore Magan Head won when her opponent retired in the second set at the No.5 position and freshman Lesshika Vala won in a tie-breaker at No.6.
In the men's match, the Patriots avoided a sweep in doubles competition when freshmen Matt Astell and Paul Meuwissen claimed a 9-8 win at No.3 by taking the tiebreaker 7-4.
FMU freshmen William Anth-Forsberg brought the Patriots to within 4-2 with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No.1 position before Lander claimed the final three singles contests.
