Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Flagler College junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Ashworth pitched a complete game giving up just three runs as the Saints win 5-3 to finish off the three-game sweep of Francis Marion University, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 18) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.
Francis Marion ends the weekend with a record of 7-5 and falls to .500 (3-3) in the conference, while Flagler improves to 8-2 and 3-0.
FMU will welcome Belmont Abbey College to Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Patriot senior designated hitter William Robbins went 3-for-4, including a homer at the plate, while junior third baseman Steven Cox added two hits to the FMU line score.
The Patriots jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as junior catcher Alex Griffith guided an RBI-single through the left side of the infield. Later that frame, senior first baseman Trey Chapman grounded out to third base, picking up an RBI in the process.
Flagler retaliated in their half of the first as junior catcher Jason Moore doubled to left field, cutting FMU's lead in half. The next time around the batting order, Moore homered to left field tying the game at 2-2 in the third inning.
Freshman first baseman Aaron Anderson knocked a hit to right field an inning later, plating sophomore right fielder Evan Lowe and putting the Saints on top 3-2.
The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the eighth when Flagler sophomore designated hitter Jimmy Peck struck a two-run homer to left field, expanding the Saints' lead to 5-2.
Robbins led off the Patriots' ninth inning with a solo home run down the right field line, but Ashworth would bounce back with three consecutive outs to end the game.
The loss goes to the Patriots' lefty starting pitcher Arien Seymour (0-1) as he pitched 3.2 innings giving up three runs on five hits. Sophomore southpaw Garrett Wilson came in relief for Seymour surrendering just one hit, no runs, and five strike outs in 3.1 innings.
In Ashworth's (2-1) nine innings, he gave up three runs on seven hits, while punching out seven batters in the victory.
