Box Score FLORENCE, SC – Senior first baseman Trey Chapman stroked a sacrifice fly to deep left center field which gave Francis Marion University the lead and eventually the 4-2 win over Chowan University, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 14) in non-conference collegiate baseball action.
Francis Marion wraps up the brief two-game series with a record of 7-2, while the Hawks fall to 2-6. The Patriots will travel to Flagler College on Saturday (DH) and Sunday with the start time set for 1 p.m. both days.
Senior designated hitter Tee DuBose went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, while driving in one run. Junior second baseman Brody Thomasson and freshman center fielder Peyton Creech both accounted for two hits in four at-bats for FMU. Senior catcher William Robbins extended his hitting streak to seven games with one knock in the contest, and he has reached base in every game this year.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead off Patriot sophomore righty Sam High as right fielder Marquise Lanier hit a solo homer toward the scoreboard in left field. Chowan added to their lead in the fourth stanza as junior shortstop Harley Davidson singled to right center field on the first pitch, scoring senior first baseman Robert Williams and giving Chowan a 2-0 lead.
FMU answered in its half of the fourth inning with two runs. Thomasson singled to right field plating junior right fielder Cole Hinnant, and Chapman scored on the play after a throwing error by Lanier.
The Patriots added to their lead in the sixth inning after Robbins reached on a fielding error by junior third baseman Nick Rose. DuBose followed with a single and junior right fielder Cole Hinnant advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Chapman then hit a sacrifice fly to pick up the go-ahead RBI and give the Patriots a 3-2 lead.
The next time around the batting order in the seventh, DuBose added an insurance run as he singled to left center plating sophomore pinch hitter Harris White.
The winning pitcher for Francis Marion was senior southpaw Adam Hornstra (1-0) as he did not give up any hits or runs while fanning two in his two innings pitched. Sophomore right handed pitcher Christian Umphlett earned his first save of the campaign with a scoreless ninth.
Freshman lefty Ryan Galliaccio (0-1) took the loss for Chowan.
