YOUNG HARRIS, GA – The 18th-ranked Francis Marion University women's tennis team defeated 50th-ranked Young Harris College 7-2 on Sunday (March 5), but the 27th-ranked FMU men lost a narrow 5-4 decision to the Mountain Lions in Peach Belt Conference action.
Both Francis Marion teams will host Augusta University on Friday at 2 p.m.
The Patriot women, who improve to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the Peach Belt, took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with 21st-ranked Samantha Koelliker and Marie Krueger winning 8-4 at No.1 and senior Eva Lieben and sophomore Anna Wintrich winning 8-6 at No.2.
Straight-set singles wins by Koelliker at No.2 and Krueger at No.3 helped the Patriots build a 4-2 advantage. Freshman Theresa Hammerschlag clinched the match with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 victory at the No.6 position.
The Francis Marion men (4-6, 0-5) trailed 2-1 after doubles action, as freshman Matheo Espinoza and Mauricio Guerrero claimed the lone point with an 8-5 win at the No.3 spot.
Victories in singles play by No.18 Richard Ashforth (at No.1), senior Jannik Roettlingsberger (No.2), and sophomore Tarass Thevenaz (No.4) rallied FMU to a 4-3 advantage. However, Young Harris (5-6, 3-3) gained three-set wins in the No.5 and No.6 singles matches to clinch the contest. In both matches, Francis Marion won the opening set.
