Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Designated hitter Zach Mozingo belted a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and top-ranked University of Mount Olive went on to claim a 7-0 victory over Francis Marion University, Tuesday evening (March 28) in non-conference baseball action.
The Patriots (21-11) will conclude their mid-week road trip with a 1:30 p.m. game at Chowan University on Wednesday. FMU will entertain Armstrong State University this coming weekend with a single game on Saturday at 5 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Freshman center fielder Connor Howell led FMU at the plate going 2-for-4. Senior catcher Logan Koch was 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in 16 of his last 17 contests. Juniors Reese Cooley and Trey Chapman recorded the other two Patriot hits.
FMU junior righty Austin Griffie (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he surrendered all seven runs on six hits in five frames. Three Patriot relievers combined for three scoreless innings.
Mount Olive junior right-hander Braxton Shetley (3-3) pitched seven shutout innings to pick up the win. He allowed four hits and struck out four as the Trojans improve to 29-5.
Mozingo finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. First baseman Drew Ellis added a sacrifice fly and a solo home run.
The Patriots did put runners in scoring position in the fourth, sixth, eighth, and ninth innings, but could not push across a run.
FMU was looking for its first victory over a No.1-ranked opponent since the 2002 season.
