Koch is clutch in 12-4 win over Falcons

Box Score

CARY, NC – Senior catcher Logan Koch drove in five runs with a homer and a single to lead 12th-ranked Francis Marion University to a 12-4 non-conference win over Saint Augustine's University, Wednesday afternoon (March 1) at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Patriots, now 14-2, will return home for a three-game series with the College of Saint Rose.  The two squads will play a Youth Day doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In addition to Koch, three other Patriots registered two hits: senior shortstop Zach Callahan, junior outfielder Reese Cooley, and junior designated hitter William Robbins.

Junior southpaw Adam Hornstra (2-0), the second of six FMU hurlers, was credited with the win.  He pitched two frames and allowed one hit with one strikeout.

FMU took an early 1-0 lead on Callahan's run-scoring infield hit in the top of the second inning.  The margin was doubled to 2-0 on Cooley's sacrifice fly in the third.  A three-run homer to right field by Koch upped the advantage to 5-0 in the top of the fourth.

A solo shot by Falcons' right fielder Timothy Carter in the bottom of the fourth trimmed the margin to 5-1, but Francis Marion responded with five runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 10-1 lead.  Cooley plated the first tally with an RBI double.  Callahan drove in one run with a ground ball, while senior second baseman Antonio Pino walked with the bases loaded and Koch followed with a two-run single.

Ruben Pinero's three-run double in the last of the sixth brought Saint Augustine's to within 10-4, but the Patriots added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Cooley.

FMU junior right fielder Zach Paquette recorded a single and a walk to extend his streak of safely reaching base to 12 games.

Falcons' starter Ali Nunn (2-1) was the losing pitcher as he surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in four frames.

Center fielder Michael Keels had three hits at the plate for Saint Augustine's (6-10).
